Bayonetta's world was initially unified. However, after the Doomsday War of Good and Evil the world was divided into three sections: Paradiso , Inferno , and the Human World. Purgatorio is a space between the three worlds. Only sages, witches, and demons are allowed to enter and leave. Bayonetta has entered purgatory, which is why the humans in the game appear transparent. Purgatory is a place where humans cannot be contacted and do not interact with each other. Items are the exception. Purgatory follows the same rules as the world of humans when it comes to the placement and destruction items. The broken bottles and cans are what make passersby run away.
